Stop the Assault on Regional Australia: Backing Our Farmers and Small Businesses

This federal budget is a big-spending, high-taxing assault on regional Australia. Looking at the benches opposite, it is completely obvious that those in the Albanese Labor Government do not understand the realities of regional communities: most of them have clearly never even set foot on a proper working farm.

As a proud, third-generation farmer, I know exactly what it takes to run an agricultural business. I watched my mother get up before dawn to feed the kids, spend the entire day packing fruit in the shed, and then work late into the night handling the business accounts. My father worked the fields from daylight to dusk. Like so many families in our region, they did not have spare cash to pour into superannuation: the farm was their super.

Labor's addiction to spending has hit local producers and family businesses hard, with an extra $77 billion in taxation buried in this budget. Here is why we must fight back against this high-tax agenda:

  • Taxing Farmers Out of Existence: With Labor's brutal changes to capital gains tax, negative gearing, and trusts, families who have poured their lives into building up agricultural land will see their retirement security stripped away.

  • An Unwanted Shareholder in Small Business: Small business is the absolute backbone of our nation. Under these new tax rates, local operators have effectively taken on the Prime Minister as an unwanted shareholder claiming a massive stake in their hard work.

  • Taxing from the Cradle to the Grave: Despite promising over fifty times that there would be no new taxes, this government has snuck a cruel inheritance tax into the budget papers, trying to tax everyday Australians at every single stage of life.

When a government taxes something, you get less of it: less housing, less investment, less small business, and less farming. The Coalition has a clear plan to axe these toxic taxes because we believe in rewarding aspiration, not punishing it. The choice is clear between a government that takes from our communities or an opposition that builds them up.
