DAWSON TEAMING WITH LOCAL SPORTING CHAMPIONS

Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox, met with local Wulguru sporting champion Tinsley Illin who represented the region at the National Swimming Championships in August.

Tinsley is 1 of 40 recipients of the first round of 2023-2024 Federal Government Local Sporting Champions and Local Para Champions program that are doing the Dawson electorate proud.

The Local Sporting Champions program provides financial assistance for coaches, officials and competitors aged 12-18 participating in state, national or international championships. Successful applicants will receive $500-$750 towards the cost of attending their championships.

The Local Para Champions program provides financial assistance for coaches, officials and competitors aged 12-24 participating in state, national or international championships for athletes with a disability. Successful applicants will receive $750-$1000 towards the cost of attending their championships.

Mr Willcox said that 40 recipients being awarded the funding in the Dawson electorate is a fantastic result and showcases the abilities that our regional and rural teens and young adults have.

“The successful applicants, like Tinsley, are from all over the Dawson electorate including Kuttabul, Idalia, Annandale, Mackay, Bowen, Ayr, Balnagowan, Wulguru, Blacks Beach, Bucasia, Slade Point, Hampden, Oonoonba, and Cannon Valley.

“These local sporting legends are competing in sports including basketball, soccer, rugby, netball, hockey, cricket, equestrian, swimming, cycling and athletics.

“I want to personally congratulate all of the local sporting champions program recipients and their families who are supporting them on this journey, and I want to encourage everyone to get their applications in for round 2,” Mr Willcox said.

Round 2 for the Local Sporting Champions and Local Para Champions programs close on Tuesday 31st October 2023.
